Sligo Leitrim & District Soccer League v Fermanagh and Western
January 10, 2023
On Saturday 30th May the Fermanagh and Western Football League played a Representative Challenge Match against the Sligo Leitrim and District Soccer League in Sligo.
Benny Boyle 15th minute
Ryan Campbell 29th minute (penalty)
Ciaran Smith 40th minute
Own Goal 80th minute
For the 1st time since 2009, the Fermanagh and Western Football League Representative side played a match when they travelled to Sligo to take on a young but very talented Sligo Leitrim and District Soccer League. The opening 10 minutes was an open affair with both sides creating good chances. We opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Benny Boyle headed home an excellent cross from Aidy McCaffrey.
Ryan Campbell double our lead when he converted from the penalty spot after Ciaran Smith was fouled just inside the box. At the other end of the pitch the home teams forwards were creating chances but couldn't find a way past Joel Pedden. Just before half Captain Ciaran Smith scored the goal of the game when he fired an unstoppable shot from outside the box after been set up by David Elliott.
Both sides made several changes at half time with the home side upping the tempo and pressing alot more. They created quite a few chances but were unable to beat Tieran McNamee who pulled off several great saves. In the dying minutes we made it 4 nil when a Mark Cutler cross/shot was unluckily turned into the net by the home teams keeper.
It was an excellent performance by everyone, although the final scoreline was a bit harsh on the hosts as it was a lot closer game than the scoreline would suggest.
Man of the Match - Benny Boyle
We would like to thank the Sligo Leitrim and District Soccer League for the game, hospitality and for providing the excellent facilities (MacSharry Park) to host the match. We look forward to hosting the return match next year.
